In its new festive campaign, the UK’s largest supermarket reveals that it will #StandForJoy, delivering an affordable, joyful Christmas for all – even the family pet.

Tesco has yesterday unveiled its Christmas advert for 2022. Featuring a broadcast from ‘The Christmas Party’, the ad shows that the supermarket is standing up for joy this year, helping people to celebrate in style, no matter what their budget is.

The campaign acknowledges that joy may be in short supply at the moment and that everyone is facing a squeeze on their finances, but also recognises that Christmas is important to so many, especially after the last few years. In fact, the retailer’s research reveals that 87% of people say Christmas brings them joy, and over a third (36%) believe this year it’s more important to them than ever before.

The ad opens on the snowy landscapes of Britain, as the narrator informs us that Tesco has formed ‘The Christmas Party’, which is standing up for joy.

As the Christmas Party moves through the streets and visits families across the UK, we catch a glimpse of some of the best festive food moments: mince pies, pigs in blankets, delicious desserts, party food and cheese boards, to name a few.

What’s more, the Christmas Party also addresses some of those big Christmas questions, like when is bin day? And what is the greatest Christmas film?

Throughout the advert, Tesco demonstrates how it is committed to helping the nation prepare for Christmas, with great offers including a Christmas dinner for 5 under £25, 3 for 2 on party food, Finest Mince Pies from £1.12, 16 varieties of pigs in blankets, and great value gifts for all – even the dog.

Alessandra Bellini, Chief Customer Officer at Tesco, says:

“It’s very important that our seasonal campaigns reflect how our customers genuinely feel and what we know they are looking for. We understand that it is a tough time at the moment with everyone’s finances under pressure, but we also know that people are looking forward to Christmas – in fact our research shows that there is even more excitement around it than usual.

“This is why we decided to officially stand up for joy this Christmas. Through our campaign, we take a look at those moments during the festive period that unite us all – including the delight of eating delicious desserts, sitting around a table together with loved ones, movie nights in our pjs and even the inevitable confusion around bin day – to put a smile on people’s faces as we prepare for a season of meaningful celebrations.

“We want to help everyone enjoy the best bits of Christmas, no matter their budget, and so we’ve also included just some of our many little helps that will make your money go further. From us all at Tesco, we wish you a very merry Christmas.”

The concept was developed by Creative Director Christine Turner and Creative team, Marc Rayson & Callum Prior of BBH, and directed by Fredrik Bond from MJZ production. The TV ad comes in a 60-second version, with shorter edits also available, and is set to the soundtrack of Europe’s ‘The Final Countdown’. The cast includes actors, as well as Tesco colleagues from across the country. The campaign comprises of TV, press, OOH, radio, social, in-store and PR, and launches on Sunday 6th November. The full 60-second ad airs on TV for the first time on ITV during ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here’.
