Leading Japanese food brand Yutaka has launched a sashimi grade salmon for UK supermarkets as part of its mission to demystify authentic Japanese food and make it more accessible to UK consumers, who have a growing appetite for Asian flavours.
Sushi is an iconic Japanese dish and sushi-making at home has been increasing since the pandemic, according to sales of Yutaka’s sushi products. However, making authentic sushi requires sashimi grade salmon which until now has only been available from specialist fishmongers.
Yutaka, which already has an extensive range of authentic Japanese products available in UK supermarkets, has partnered with salmon expert Bomlo to launch Yutaka Sashimi Salmon (160g, £12) which uses hyper fresh salmon from Norway.
The salmon is kept at a low temperature in a Norwegian fjord next to the factory, which minimises stress on the fish ensuring a softer texture of the meat. A Japanese technique called IKEJIME is then used to kill the salmon as humanely as possible, with each fish then filleted within two hours after harvest. This fish processing technique is called ‘Pre-rigor’, a method that preserves the ultimate level of freshness of the fish. The salmon fillet is then frozen immediately to retain the freshness for longer.
Yutaka frozen Sashimi Salmon is easy to store and use at home. It can keep fresh for months in the home freezer and, once defrosted, the skinless and boneless salmon is safe to eat raw and ready to be used for authentic sushi and sashimi dishes.
Ken Furukawa, CEO for Tazaki Foods, the company that owns the Yutaka brand, says: “We know UK consumers have an increasing appetite for authentic Asian foods and as a100 brand we are passionate about sharing the very best ingredients and making authentic Japanese cuisine more accessible.
“Which is why we have partnered with salmon specialist Bomlo to launch our Yutaka Sashimi Salmon which enables consumers to have an authentic sushi or sashimi experience at home, straight from the freezer. This frozen format also makes it more convenient for supermarkets to store and sell sashimi grade salmon to their shoppers.
“Our sashimi salmon also complements our existing range of ambient and frozen Japanese foods including our sushi rice, sushi nori, sushi kit, wasabi paste, sushi ginger, sesame and other products which are used in sushi making.
“Right now we are in talks with a number of UK retailers to ensure consumers can experience the true taste of Japanese sushi at home using a full range of quality Yutaka products purchased from their favourite supermarket.”
Authenticity is at the heart of Yutaka – the UK’s original Japanese food brand – which has provided consumers and restaurants in the UK the chance to discover the true taste of Japan for 28 years. As well as having an extensive range of around 100 Japanese products available in the UK, the brand also supports consumers with a wide range of recipe ideas across all of its platforms.
