A group of team leaders at Derby-based S&A Foods has completed a valuable qualification with Derby College.
Nineteen people from the company, which specialises in the manufacture and supply of a wide range of fresh chilled ready meals to leading supermarkets throughout the UK and Europe, completed the level two NVQ Team Leading qualification in the workplace, supported by assessors from Derby College.
S&A Foods Founder and CEO Perween Warsi MBE said: “In the competitive world of food manufacture, workforce skills are the factor that gives companies the competitive edge. Ongoing training is therefore vital to ensure that everyone has the right skills to improve what they do on a daily basis.

Among the staff to have completed the qualifications is Louise Griffin who oversees production training and special projects.
She said: “I have been here for ten years and have worked my way up through the company. This training has enabled me to improve communications with my colleagues throughout the company, as well as developing my skills and reaffirming my confidence.”
Kamaljit Sanghera, who started at the company 11 years ago as a weigher and, after working as a chef, is now a supervisor in the stores and weighing room added: “I have learnt so much, particularly how to communicate better with colleagues and how to solve problems.
“We had great support from Derby College, with the assessor coming in to fit in with our shift patterns and ensure that we were able to complete the qualifications with evidence from our daily jobs.”
S&A Foods was conceived and built by inspirational businesswoman and entrepreneur Perween Warsi over 20 years ago. It is now a leader in food manufacturing, servicing an impressive portfolio of major international customers from premises in Derby and employing around 600 staff.
