Quit Direct and Asda Pharmacy: Achieving over 80% Quit rates together

Asda have more than 200 in-store pharmacies across the UK, offering a range of services that help customers lead a healthier lifestyle. Asda pharmacists don’t just dispense prescriptions – they can also be a valuable source of advice on the public’s health and wellbeing.

The pharmacies offer health checks that will test blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and even develop a personalised plan to help you quit smoking.

Since January 2012, Asda in Tipton has been working closely with specialist smoking cessation organisation Quit Direct to further improve its healthcare offering. Quit Direct was awarded a structured contract to supply smoking cessation services for NHS West Midlands in September 2011.This enables it to provide its services for free to many organisations and at public clinics throughout the region. The move has already paid major health dividends for Asda staff and customers in Tipton.

Asda Pharmacy Manager Kully Gill said: “Asda Pharmacy prides itself in delivering excellent healthcare to its colleagues and patients. Quit Direct has been a great asset in achieving this goal with a quit rate above 80 percent every month.

Quit Direct’s advisor Stepanie Haynes has provided an outstanding level of practice and has been paramount to the success of this service.”

Quit Direct’s on-site Advisor Stephanie Haynes said: “Giving up smoking is really the most important health resolution a smoker can make.

Our service is currently provided two days a week at ASDA – each client has twelve free sessions, one every Tuesday or Thursday.

I offer the particular level of personal support each smoker requires. The sessions help us build up a real rapport with the clients, better enabling them to sustain the motivation to reach their goal.

Our programme includes behavioural counselling aligned with the recommended Nicotine Replacement Therapy product best suited to each individual. We don’t only offer free weekly group or 1:1 sessions, but also provide additional support as required by telephone, SMS text and Skype on-line.

We are delighted to have 58 clients on board at the moment with new people wanting to quit signing up most weeks. Very often, those attending are kind enough to recommend us to their friends. It really makes it worthwhile.”
