interfruit-005-rgbBurnett Barrows Refrigeration of Birmingham, in conjunction with Staffordshire Thermal Construction Engineers (STC Midlands Ltd) has successfully completed the construction and commissioning of a new refrigerated food processing plant for fresh fruit and vegetable wholesalers Interfruit Ltd at Witton, Birmingham.

Interfruit, has moved to the state of the art 1600 square metre facility from the Birmingham Wholesale Market, three and a quarter miles away. The new facility gives fast access to the M6 and the Midlands motorway network.

The purpose built facility incorporates nine refrigerated rooms ranging from 93 cubic metres to 1,575 cubic metres operating at temperatures from 4°C to 8°C. Also included in the new facility is Fishco, the fresh fish wholesale sister company of Interfruit, which operates at temperatures from -2°C to 8°C.

Interfruit and Fishco supply a wide range of customers on a daily basis, from high quality Restaurants, retail and convenience sectors, the hospitality sector and educational and care establishments predominantly within the west Midlands area. Maintaining the quality of their products is an overriding requirement for delivering their premium service.

The refrigeration equipment specified for the project by Burnett Barrows was a bespoke housed Multi Compressor Pack solution manufactured by Hubbard Products consisting of 10 High Temperature/Medium Temperature compressors. The pack incorporated Copeland scroll ZB 45 compressors, Carel Control and a Traxoil oil system housed in an attenuated enclosure.

The Multi Compressor Pack operates in conjunction with Hubbard supplied, air-side equipment by Lu-ve Contardo. The exacting specification required low velocity evaporators for selected areas of the prep rooms and was specified when taking into account the demanding operational requirements of Interfruit and Fishco and an exacting construction and installation schedule.

Burnett Barrows Refrigeration is carving a niche for themselves as experts in food processing refrigeration, this being the third food processing plant the company has successfully completed in the last three years within the west Midlands region for major food process operators and all of which specified Hubbard manufactured packs.

Peter Burnett of Burnett Barrows said: “Working alongside the main contractor, STC Midlands, it was essential that the specification we requested was ‘man enough for the job’ the food processing industry is a highly demanding sector where premium product quality is demanded at all times. The Hubbard pack is everything that we asked for and the support from the Hubbard Technical team has been exceptional, their understanding of our client’s requirements and their knowledge of manufacturing packaged condensing units for the UK’s blue-chip high street supermarket retailers were an added bonus for all of those associated with this project”.

Interfruit and Fishco moved into the fully operational site on the 7th August.
