Vegan Food Group (VFG), a leading innovator in plant-based foods, has completed an asset sale of its Wiesbaum production facility in Germany to the New Originals Company, a rapidly expanding European tofu producer. This strategic move allows VFG to concentrate on expanding operations at its larger Lüneburg facility, which produces the bulk of its plant-based products. The transaction includes the transfer of certain assets, brands, and production capabilities related to tofu manufacturing.

The Wiesbaum site, renowned for its tofu production heritage since the 1980s under Tofutown, will thrive under the stewardship of the New Originals Company. Founded in February 2024, it employs 600 people across five countries, positioning itself as Europe’s leader in tofu innovation. New Originals Company was established by the Lunter family, tofu pioneers since 1991, the NLT management holding and Raiffeisen Landesbank Oberösterreich, a seasoned investor in food manufacturing.

Quote from Dave Sparrow, CEO, Vegan Food Group:

“This strategic asset sale of the Wiesbaum site allows us to concentrate our resources on expanding our Lüneburg facility, which is key to our long-term growth plans. While tofu remains an important product category for VFG with product launches planned in Q1 2025, this transaction enables us to optimize our operations while ensuring continued production of high-quality tofu products through the New Originals Company’s expertise in this field.”

This move signals VFG’s commitment to scaling its broader plant-based portfolio while securing its place in the tofu market through its strategic partnership with the New Originals Company. The divestment will allow VFG to allocate more resources towards innovation and production expansion, particularly at the Lüneburg site, while leveraging the New Originals Company’s deep expertise in tofu production to continue growing this key product line.

Quote from Markus Kerres, CEO, Tofutown:

“The sale of the Wiesbaum site to the New Originals Company ensures the continuation of its long-standing tradition in tofu production. We believe this transaction will benefit both companies in their respective missions to promote plant-based nutrition.”

The New Originals Company’s focus on creating innovative tofu products that meet modern nutritional needs will benefit from Wiesbaum’s legacy and VFG’s distribution channels across Europe.

Quote from Matthias Krön, CEO, The New Originals Company:

“Bernd Drohsin and the Tofutown team in Wiesbaum have been pioneering organic tofu and tofu products in Europe since the 1980s. They have been making great traditional tofu and innovative products, winning the trust of people in many countries in Europe. The New Originals Company is proud to continue this long tradition and will continue pioneering tofu as a key part of the food transition in Europe and partner with Vegan Food Group in the UK.”

With the completion of this asset sale, Vegan Food Group will sharpen its focus on its core operations and product lines, while the New Originals Company expands its tofu production capabilities. Both companies remain committed to delivering sustainable, plant-based products to European consumers, contributing to the ongoing transition towards plant-based alternatives in their respective market segments.
