The country’s first chicken dinner inspired roll has arrived at selected Asda stores after being developed by the UK’s number one sausage roll brand Wall’s Pastry.

Not only does the chicken range taste like a traditional dinner with sage and onion stuffing, it has also been developed as a healthier snack – with 6.8g saturated fat, 17g fat and 324 calories in the 120g Jumbo Roll.

This is the second new product launch in Wall’s healthier range – following its plant-based vegan rolls that launched four months ago – and includes Wall’s Chicken Jumbo Roll and a four-pack of Wall’s Chicken Rolls with Sage & Onion.

Michael Holton, brand manager at Wall’s Pastry, said: “There’s currently a big gap in the market for chilled chicken pastry products and we’re incredibly excited to be launching a healthier pastry roll that is now lower in fat and packed full of flavour.

“Consumers deserve to have a leaner, more affordable alternative to a pork sausage roll, but they shouldn’t have to miss out on the classic sausage roll experience – whether it’s for a quick dinner with the family, or an on-the-go treat at lunchtime. The chicken rolls are ideal for those wanting to reduce their red meat consumption and offer something a little different for consumers who are looking for a higher protein product.”

The chicken rolls have been developed by Addo Food Group and are made with 100% British chicken thigh, onion, garlic, nutmeg and a blend of fresh herbs including sage, parsley, rosemary and marjoram wrapped in a low-fat puff pastry.

Rebecca Bolt, head of innovation at Addo Food Group, which owns the license to Wall’s Pastry, said: “The recipes were developed to provide health-conscious consumers with a pastry roll that delivers first on taste, contains significantly less fat and meets the rising demand for alternative proteins – making the range perfect for consumers who want to cut their red meat intake.

“You can really taste the different herbs and stuffing flavours that are used in the chicken roll – the taste experience is reminiscent of a traditional chicken dinner, one of the nation’s favourites. The chicken thigh retains its taste and moisture, so the meat is succulent and tender, surrounded in our crispy, flaky pastry.”

The 120g Chicken Jumbo Roll has 6.8g saturated fat, 17g fat, only 324 calories per roll, and 13g protein, which is almost a quarter of the 55g recommended daily intake of protein for a man (23.64%) and almost 30% of a woman’s (28.8%).

One 50g snack roll contains 3.4g of saturated fat, 8.1g of fat and 145 calories, with 5.3g of protein.

Rebecca added: “Following the rise of flexitarianism, it is clear that the ever-growing trend towards alternative proteins is here to stay – modern consumers are now increasingly more conscious of the health and environmental impact of their food.”

The chicken products are part of the brand’s move towards a healthier snacking range, as it looks to provide on-the-go savoury pastries to appeal to the UK’s rising number of health-conscious consumers.

The range is available at selected Asda stores across the UK.
