Tesco set new records at Christmas, with sales up +8.4% in the sixth consecutive Christmas of growth.

Visits to Tesco.com were up 93%, the retailer exceeding its all-time records for home deliveries and click and collect.

Many consumers went for a healthy alternative, with 650,000 pigless blankets sold, a 27% growth in low/no alcohol products and a 90% increase in sales of Plant Chef.

Yet shoppers also enjoyed a treat, with Tesco Finest sales up +14%, plus 30 million packs of Tesco Core and Tesco Finest mince pies, 7.7 million bottles of fizz and £74m worth of desserts sold.

Tesco colleagues delivered over 400 million individual items for Christmas, donated £60m worth of meals to foodbanks and charities and supported 786,000 vulnerable customers.

Ken Murphy, Chief Executive, commented: “Our focus on looking after our customers, including delivering record availability, robust safety measures and great value has enabled us to maintain strong momentum through the Christmas period, outperforming the market every week.

“We delivered a record Christmas across all of our formats and channels.  In response to unprecedented demand for online groceries, colleagues delivered over seven million orders containing more than 400 million individual items over the Christmas period.”
