yankee_steakhouse_grillsFrozen foods manufacturer Glendale, best known for its Yankee and Great British Pudding retail brands, is championing the independents’ cause with the introduction of price-marked, uncooked Yankee Steak House Grills and Beefburger Quarter Pounders. This represents a timely return to frozen, raw meat products for the Manchester-based company, which established its early market reputation with Glendale grillsteaks and burgers, and compensates for the recent withdrawal of similar lines from the independent sector.

These new products are presented in packs of six grills or four quarter pounders and are individually quick frozen, enabling customers to use as many or few as needed and reduce wastage. In line with trade demand, the retail packs are price marked at a highly affordable £1.79, at the same time offering healthy retail margins. Since many independents have limited freezer space, both new Yankee Steak House varieties are packed six to the outer case, reducing stockholding from the regular twenty inners and facilitating the economical introduction of two strong impulse purchases. Both products can be grilled or shallow fried from frozen in 10-12 minutes.

“Independent groceries and convenience stores play a key role in the retail economy, providing a handy channel for top-up shopping and impulse purchases, as well as being a vital part of the local community,” says Glendale Foods Chairman, John Mortimer. “Supplying the independent retail sector has been important to our business for many years and we like to think we understand those customers’ particular needs. The new Yankee Steak House grills and burgers are perfect impulse lines for independents, with eyecatching packs and a leading brand name, in a growing market for frozen food.”

The credit crunch has seen a marked renaissance for frozen foods, with the retail market recently bursting through the £5 billion barrier and sales of frozen meat, poultry and savoury products rising around 10% year on year. As widely reported in the national press, consumers are shifting toward frozen food from more expensive chilled lines, as a way of keeping grocery bills in check and trying to cut back on waste, since frozen products are generally cheaper and have an extended shelf life.

Frozen food is amongst the top 10 ‘must stock’ product categories for independents, which in addition to providing the profitable impulse purchases that are essential for any convenience store, offer nutritionally balanced foods of consistent quality for customers. Freezing is a natural process, which does not require the use of preservatives, yet prevents the growth of harmful microbes, arrests the natural degradation process and ‘locks in’ flavour and freshness.

“Often, customers don’t appreciate that frozen foods contain the same or greater nutritional value than fresh or chilled lines,” says John Mortimer. “With our frozen uncooked and pre-cooked retail products, independent retailers can be assured that they are selling foodstuffs of consistent freshness, tenderness and flavour. The price points might be cheap, but there’s nothing second class about these lines.”

In addition to the new uncooked grills and burgers, Glendale offers one of the most comprehensive choices of frozen meat-based snacks and foods. The Yankee range includes microwaveable burgers in sesame seed buns, in different varieties and portion sizes, as well as a selection of filled baguettes and sub rolls, and ever-popular doner kebabs in pitta bread. Also marketed under the Yankee banner and again available price-marked for independents are a tasty selection of snack meals with chips and a new deep fill lasagne, based on its successful foodservice recipe.

Perfect for the upcoming ‘winter warmer’ season, Glendale also produces 370g individual retail packs of its Great British Pudding Company baked savoury puddings. Available in best-selling varieties Steak & Kidney, Chicken & Leek, Steak, Ale & Mushroom and Lamb & Mint, these are irresistible impulse lines that make a profitable extension to independents’ frozen food stock.
