Leading world food & drink distributor Wanis International Foods is celebrating its 50th anniversary with the launch of a campaign to raise £50,000 for charitable causes.

The Wanis team are planning a whole host of fundraising activities throughout the year including sponsored 10k runs by the leadership team Sanjay and Kapil Wadhwani as well as other challenges including a ‘£1 for a 1lb’ diet programme and a ‘sponsored silence’ by the most talkative person in the business.

Additionally the business will host a summer Carnival at its depot in East London for its customers and suppliers, to help meet its ambitious target.

The money raised will be shared equally between five charities, all of which have a connection with Wanis, locally and internationally.

The charities are:

• The African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT), UK

• Guru Nanak Trust Fund, Home for the Disabled, Ranchi, India

• Leyton Orient Community Sports Programme, London

• St Anne’s Church, Greenwich Town, Jamaica

• Waltham Forest Cinema Trust, London

Sanjay Wadhwani, MD at Wanis said: “It is very special for a business, especially a family business, to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Since this is such an important milestone, we all wanted to pull together to celebrate the occasion by giving something back to the communities that have helped us to grow.

“We have always supported good causes, locally and internationally. However, we wanted to make this year extra special. All of the charities we are supporting have very ambitious aims, and are doing a fantastic job for the communities they serve. We are very excited about getting involved, raising awareness and money to help them continue the great work they are doing.”

Wanis was started by Mr Tulsidas Wadhwani (or Mr Wani as he came to be known), in 1964. From humble beginnings importing small quantities of specialist products from Africa and the Caribbean, the business has grown into one of the UK’s largest world food and drink distributors. The business operates from a 120,000 sq. ft. depot in East London, employs 140 people, provides over 8,000 different products and exports to more than 20 different countries.

Sanjay Wadhwani continued; “Our birthday is also a great opportunity to thank everyone who has helped us over the past five decades. From our customers, suppliers and the businesses we work with, to the vitally important Wanis family, who work tireless every day to make what we do so special.”
