Westmorland Ltd, the motorway services, hospitality and leisure group, is investing in a fully integrated Accord® retail system from solutions specialist Business Computer Projects Ltd (BCP) for its retailing operations.

Westmorland Ltd dates back to 1972 when it opened a small service area – Tebay Services – on the M6 motorway in Cumbria. Still the only family owned and run motorway services in the UK, the company has grown into a multi-sited operation employing over 500 people across six distinct businesses. These include the award winning Rheged visitor centre on the outskirts of Penrith, a caravan park, The Westmorland Hotel, and the J.38 Truck Stop, as well as Tebay services, north and southbound. The latter – a landmark to all M6 drivers in the area – voted the best in the UK by both Egon Ronay and Which – includes farm shops, butchers counter, lifestyle shop and Cafes serving home made food using the best local ingredients, including beef and lamb from the company’s own nearby farm.

BCP is one of the UK’s top suppliers of specialist Supply Chain solutions to the Retail industry with key clients including SPAR, Pets at Home, Morrisons Supermarkets, ARAMARK, Nisa Today’s and Ian Allen.

The investment in new technology was stimulated by the growth and diversification of Westmorland’s business operations beyond the capacities of its existing retail IT solution. BCP was chosen following a thorough selection process reviewing offerings from a number of leading systems suppliers.

The new system encompasses BCP’s complete Accord® in-store and head office retail solution to be implemented at Tebay Services, including the Farm Stores, the J.38 Truck Stop and the Rheged Centre.

The system is being implemented in a series of phases with the first phase – the forecourt shop at the Rheged Centre and the Head Office system at Tebay itself – already live.  The second phase, encompassing the northbound and southbound forecourts at Tebay Services and the J.38 Truck Stop, is currently underway.  The final phase, the Visitor Centre itself, will complete the installation with all areas being controlled centrally from the head office system at Tebay.

BCP was chosen because of the versatility of the Accord® solution which provides the quality and breadth of functionality required for Westmorland’s diverse operations, together with BCP’s professional approach and ability to understand Westmorland’s unique business model.

Ray Allen, Financial Controller at Westmorland and a key member of the selection panel: “The BCP team really got to grips with our needs and are a pleasure to work with.  The first phase of the implementation is working well and the roll out to Tebay is going very smoothly. We’re looking forward to having all sites up and running and the whole system operational so we can take full advantage of it and the centralised control it will give us.”
