Smurfit Kappa Print Vision has once again excelled at this year’s EFIA awards with five awards across the Post print and Pre-print categories, including three golds.

The awards were given for an array of innovative packs, from a vintage, single malt whisky box to a drinks pack that doubles up as an ice box and an RRP solution for rice.

Print Vision Chelmsford won gold in the Post Print, Coated line/screen category for the Thatchers Somerset Cider Finest Selection case, using their unique ability to flexo print to the finest register on an FE-Flute in five colours. UV varnish enabled the bottle label details to be read easily whilst capturing the essence of the brand with fine tones, creating shelf standout. The pack uses a skillet style top with a three point glued full crash lock base.

Also winning silver in this category was the Bacardi Breezer Cool Box, which has a pack quality unique among B-Flute prints, providing a minimal cost material that can also hold ice for the Breezers in a party or barbecue environment. B-Flute is traditionally difficult to print on because the appearance of the flutes can destroy the aesthetics of the pack, but Smurfit Kappa use top quality sheet board combined with the skills of their printers in applying minimal pressures yet achieving a high-quality result.

True to Smurfit Kappa Print Vision’s enviable track record in producing award winning packaging for the alcoholic beverages market, Tannochside won a second gold for the Aberlour Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 12 x 1 litre case in the Post Print, Uncoated line/screen category.

Brand owners Chivas Brothers Ltd required a print excellence that would fit with the image of their 15-year-old, Double Cask Matured, Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Print Vision delivered this by printing six colours on a 175 white top Kraft C-Flute with a tone image running through the main panel. The pack was printed using a Bobst 2000, ceramic Anilox roll screen use 350 and TDR print plates with screen count 75dpi.

Smurfit Kappa’s Chivas Regal pack also attained bronze in this category.

The third gold was for Tamworth’s Veetee Rice pack for Costco USA in the Pre-print, Wide web process category. The pack was specifically developed to show off the premium nature of the Veetee product but was challenging due to large areas of solid black, meaning it was crucial to get the correct balance of impression between the solid and tonal areas in the black and red channels. The pack was printed in 4 colours on a coated substrate for maximum affect. With fine half tones through the pack, Smurfit Kappa Print Vision was able to recreate Veetee Rice’s logo using the least number of colours possible and provide the customer with a more competitive pack through lightweight liners and innovative conversion technology.
