The expansion aims to drive incremental growth in the UK ambient cake category by offering consumers a premium yet accessible taste of irresistibly Italian indulgence, inspired by the warmth, craftsmanship and sweet pleasure of everyday Italian living.
The Balconi journey is rooted in the heart of Italian craftsmanship. It began in 1953 as a small artisanal pastry shop in Nerviano, near Milan. The founding family lived just upstairs, pouring their hearts into creating simple, delicious treats, starting with a soft sponge sandwich filled with creamy cocoa. From the very beginning, Balconi embodied the care, passion and tradition that continue to define the brand’s irresistibly Italian identity today.
Today, that sweet family legacy remains the brand’s heartbeat. Balconi has successfully transitioned from a traditional ‘casa-bottega’ (home-business) into a manufacturing powerhouse. While the brand now utilises state-of-the-art automated capabilities, capable of producing 2,000 cake bars every minute, it remains dedicated to the authentic recipes, quality ingredients and traditional touch that first made the family famous in Nerviano.
Tapping into growing demand for mindful, permissible indulgence, the extensive UK launch includes Cocoa Cream and Milk Cream Cake Bars and Sponge Slices, bringing shoppers a little moment of irresistibly Italian indulgence inspired by Italy’s café culture and love of sweet everyday rituals.
Michael Inpong, CMO of Valeo Foods, shared his excitement for the launch:
“We are absolutely thrilled to be expanding the passion and care of a real Italian family bakery to the UK. We know that the British public are a nation of culinary magpies with a deep love and respect for Italian culture. Balconi offers a little moment of Italian indulgence, a sweet pause inspired by the warmth, passion and pleasure of everyday life in Italy.”
To ensure maximum shelf standout and easy range navigation for shoppers, Balconi’s UK packaging has been meticulously designed to reflect the brand’s irresistibly Italian heritage. The visual identity features a clear colour-coded system that shifts in tone to indicate the level of indulgence, while an Italian flag ribbon guarantees strong provenance cues at the point of purchase.
Shoppers should look out for Balconi in Tesco and Asda stores nationwide from June 1st.
