Sales of goats’ cheese have seen a healthy rise in recent years, as more and more British consumers choose it over other cheese varieties. Delamere Dairy has seen volumes grow 30% in the last 2 years and according to a survey conducted by the British Cheese Board, goats’ cheese now ranks in the top ten of British consumers’ favourite cheese types.
“One of the reasons for this growth in popularity is the emergence of celebrity chefs and their cookery books which have helped to drive sales and bring goats’ cheese to the fore,” comments Ed Salt, Commercial Director at Delamere Dairy.
“It is also hard to find a restaurant menu now where goats’ cheese doesn’t appear somewhere – either as a starter, as part of a main course or on the cheeseboard – and perhaps this is encouraging consumers to give it a try at home.”
Delamere Dairy supplies a range of award-winning goats’ cheeses, from a soft mild spreadable cheese to a mature, full-flavoured cheddar-style variety. Other products in the cheese range include mild and medium cheddar-style goats’ cheeses, a Greek feta-style cheese and tapas-style products – goats’ cheese in bacon and honey cheese in pastry. The mild cheddar-style cheese is a great way to introduce goats’ cheese to new consumers and the tapas-style products come in handy individual portions making easy and convenient snacks or starters.
New for late 2009 is a 125g soft honey infused goats’ cheese log, sliced into 6 for ease of use, and makes for a delicious alternative to plain soft cheeses, in savoury applications or as part of a cheeseboard.
Delamere Dairy supplies fresh and long-life goats’ milk, goats’ butter and a range of natural and flavoured goats’ yogurts. See page 9 for further background on the goats’ milk products market and the Delamere Dairy business.
