Sainsbury’s welcomed customers to two new stores in local communities today with the opening of Berrylands Raeburn Avenue Local in southwest London and Allerton Road Local in Liverpool.  Now open from 7am to 11pm seven days a week, colleagues in both stores celebrated with ribbon cutting ceremonies to mark the occasion. In Raeburn Avenue, Tariq Shabbeer from local charity Save The World Club joined Grande Avenue Primary School pupils and PTA Chair Lucy Richards to show their support.

Each around 2,500 sq. ft in size, the new stores will offer great value, high quality food, groceries and everyday essentials for the convenience of their local neighbourhoods. Bread and pastries will be baked instore every day and customers will be able to choose from an inviting selection of fresh fruit and veg, food to go and ready meals, as well as specialist ranges and seasonal favourites designed to cater for the diverse local communities they serve. Both stores also will offer self-service Costa Coffee machines, giving busy shoppers the option to pick up a piping hot coffee on the go.

As part of the retailer’s sustainability Plan for Better, Sainsbury’s is committed to using 100% renewable electricity across its entire estate, meaning that the new Locals will not rely on any fossil fuels for their heating, lighting, refrigeration and ventilation needs.

The new stores also feature the option to checkout using Mobile Pay or SmartShop, Sainsbury’s scan, pay and go technology, enabling customers to pay for products in-store using their smartphones and making the process faster and more convenient.

The colleague teams that make up the new stores will play an active part in their local communities. For example, each store will work with local food donation partners, helping to ensure that any surplus food will go to those who need it most. They will also support Sainsbury’s nationwide charity and community programmes, such as its annual ‘Help Brighten a Million Christmases’ campaign, and as part of the retailer’s long-standing partnership with Comic Relief. Sainsbury’s is once again supporting Red Nose Day 2022, which this year is taking place on 18th March.

Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s Property Director, said: “I was very pleased that we were able to welcome not just one but two communities through the doors of new Sainsbury’s Locals this morning. Our new stores help us to bring more choice and flexibility to our customers and I’m looking forward to hearing their feedback about our two newest arrivals to the Sainsbury’s estate.”

Evelin Da Silva, Berrylands Raeburn Avenue Local Store Manager, said: “I’d like to thank the local community for the warm welcome we’ve received this morning, including Tariq and Lucy for their support with today’s launch. The new store looks fantastic and my team and I feel sure our new customers are going to enjoy it as much as we do.”

John Baker, Liverpool Allerton Road Local Store Manager, said: “I’m delighted to have opened our doors on Allerton Road today and we can’t wait to bring our brilliant service and delicious food to more customers in in the coming weeks. My team has done a great job in the run-up to today and we’re really proud of our new store.”
