The GroceryAid Windermere Row 2017, sponsored by Mars UK, raised up to £70,000 for the charity. Support came from many companies and individuals across the grocery industry, with twenty-five teams taking on the challenging 11 mile course.
The weather was not kind to the rowers as the rain poured down on and off all day, even delaying the morning session start by an hour. However, spirits remained high with the team taking to the water with great enthusiasm. Spectators watched from the drier comfort of the Miss Cumbria passenger vessel and did great work cheering on the teams.
At the evening celebration party, various awards were presented by long-time supporter of GroceryAid and the Windermere Row, Keith Hogg, Non-Executive Director, Greenvale. This year the Tesco team, led by GroceryAid Chair of Trustees Ruston Smith, claimed victory for the fastest overall time, completing the course in 2 hours and 30 seconds. CPM were the fastest in the afternoon row coming in with a time of just over 2 hours and 8 mins.
The award for the fastest boat of six rowers went to Kimberly-Clark Team 1 and their colleagues in Team 2 took the award for ‘best endeavours’ as they overcame the stress of an oar snapping. Once again the Mondelez teams were recognised for the third year in a row for being the highest fundraisers, raising an outstanding £6,000. The prize for the best fancy dress was claimed by the minions from Weetabix!
Our congratulations and thanks go to all those who took part and helped to raise funds for the charity. We would also like to give our special thanks to Keith Hogg for his personal support and to Tony Lorman, Commercial Director (UK), Danone, who this year joined the organisers as Keith’s ‘apprentice’. Next year’s Windermere Row will take place on 12th May 2018.
