Leading Caribbean food and drink supplier Grace Foods UK has pledged to raise up to £10,000 over the next 12 months for the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT).
The ACLT will be the second charity to have benefitted from Grace Food’s UK’s ‘Penny Pledge’ campaign, which launched last year. One penny from every case of Grace-branded products sold by its subsidiary company Enco Products is donated to a designated charity which is selected annually.
The first year of the Penny Pledge campaign saw tremendous success, raising £10,000 for the Jamaica Basic Schools Foundation, an organisation which works to improve the conditions of education for young children in Jamaica, aged between three and five.
“Retailers know that every case of our market-leading Caribbean food and drink products they buy sees money going to a worthwhile cause,” said Ryan Mack, Managing Director for Grace Foods UK. “We were delighted with the success of last year’s campaign, and are now looking forward to raising funds to support the ACLT and its valuable work.”
The ACLT was established in 1996 and aims to raise awareness about the importance of black and minority ethnic (BME) individuals registering as potential blood, bone marrow and organ (BBO) donors to enable worldwide donor searches on behalf of black, mixed race and ethnic minority patients. The charity’s ultimate aim is to accelerate the saving of more lives within the BME community.
“The ACLT aims to offer hope and a healthy future to someone whose disorder may otherwise prove fatal. The charity has raised the numbers of potential BME donors from 550 to approx. 40,000 and many lives have been saved in the process,” says Orin Lewis OBE – Chief Executive of the ACLT. “Funds such as those that will be raised by the Penny Pledge campaign are vital in allowing us to continue raising awareness and holding recruitment drives to register BBO donors”
