It’s been a busy few months at the new Granny’s Secret offices and warehouse close to Wotton-u-Edge in rural Gloucestershire. Since moving to their new premises the Granny’s Secret team has wasted no time in revamping their successful range to further increase appeal. These artisan preserves sourced from the rich rural heartland of Serbia bring a taste of the Balkans where East meets West and good, natural food is woven into the tradition and culture of the towns and villages.

New listing agreements have been reached with the Tree of Life and Suma Wholefoods as well as an online listing with Holland & Barrett. This is a big step forward for the business which began its quest to bring Serbian preserves to the UK market four years ago. With the listing at NetJets Europe last year, with Granny’s all natural juices and Selfridges&Co in 2014, with six extra jams and 100% fruit spreads (with no added sugar), these recent listings are now safely positioning Granny’s Secret as a healthy and premium brand in one.

The latest innovation is Green Ayvar which slots in alongside the other Roasted Red Pepper Ayvar spreads. These are now available in a smaller 200g jar. Jar sizes have also changed for the Granny’s Secret range of extra Jams, now 240g. Awards: Granny’s Secret UK is among the Great Taste winners of 2016. This adds nicely to a 7 Great Taste Awards collection since 2013, as well as the World’s Marmalade Awards – Dalemain Cumbria, where Granny’s Secret orange jams won two Bronze artisan awards.

Great Taste, the world’s most coveted blind-tasted food awards, which celebrates the very best in food and drink, has announced the Great Taste stars of 2016. Out of 10,000 products to be judged, Milanovic- Knowles Ltd (Granny’s Secret UK ) was awarded a 2-star Great Taste award for its All natural Blackcurrant juice. “A beautiful deep ruby colour, with a good aroma and real body, packed with real fruity flavour that is not too sweet and has a sharp note we especially liked. Judges felt it would make a great coulis. A blast of fruit in the nose, and a wonderful fresh blackcurrant cloud on the palate. The purity of flavour is sharp and clean. Wonderful natural fruit juice with a multitude of uses.”

Judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers as well as a whole host of food writers and journalists, Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. As well as a badge of honour, the unmistakeable black and gold Great Taste label is a signpost to a wonderful tasting product, which has been discovered through hours and hours of blindtasting by hundreds of judges.

Exports: The range is not only creating a stir in the UK, interest has also come from Taiwan, Hong Kong, the USA & Canada with deliveries of Granny’s Secret Juices and Preserves going to these countries in recent weeks. One of the first flagship retailers to notice Granny’s Secret juices was El Corte Ingles – Gourmet Experience in Spain and Portugal, which have been supplied with Granny’s Secret juices for now third year in a row.

So what is all the fuss about? When you visit Serbia you will understand the strong connection between its people and the land. Even in the cities the traditions of the countryside persist. Green markets stacked with fruit and vegetables are present in every neighbourhood and every family understands and enjoys food prepared naturally and in accordance with recipes passed down through the generations. Taste Ayvar and you are transported into the heart of the Serbian countryside with field upon field of red pepper stretching across the hills. Harvest is a family affair where peppers are hand-picked, smoked, peeled and cooked to perfection. The sights, sounds and smells of harvest and the preparation for the winter ahead echo back over the generations in a timeless rhythm of work and harmony.

Reflecting on recent successes, Managing Director Snezana Knowles is clear about the reasons for the popularity of the Granny’s Secret range. “It’s about the care, love and attention that is put into our Ayvar, Jams, Juices and Preserves. These are completely natural products without artificial preservatives. The vibrant taste of the natural fruit and peppers is ready to burst out of the jar. Better still our Granny’s Secret range has a long shelf life and attractive packaging which adds up to a great proposition for retailers. It is definitely ‘Food for the Soul.”
