Geeta’s Foods was a pioneer in bringing Indian food to the UK retail market and hence into the homes of British consumers over 20 years ago. Their first product, originally listed in flagship retailers such as Claridges, Selfridges and Fortnum and Mason, was Geeta’s Premium Mango Chutney, made to an authentic recipe handed down through generations of Geeta Samtani’s family. Geeta’s Premium Mango Chutney soon found a place on the shelves of all the major multiples, and to this day retains its distribution in each of them, a must-stock line, testament to the product quality and longevity. Since then Geeta’s has brought other traditional Indian chutneys such as Lime & Chilli to the UK market, and kept up with trends for increased heat and new ingredients with products such as Mango & Chilli Chutney and Mango & Pomegranate Chutney, enabling the speciality and independent trade to add to differentiate their fixtures from those in the multiples.
Originally Geeta’s chutneys were used primarily as an accompaniment to Indian meals, many of which are cooked with products from the developing Geeta’s ranges, including their Spice & Stir Sauces, authentic Indian Pastes and most recently Spice Mixes, each in turn meeting the desire for more consumer involvement in the cooking process, as the understanding and integration of Indian cuisine in the UK repertoire continued to grow.
More recently we have seen Geeta’s chutneys being used more and more frequently, not just with classic Indian curries, but also as a snack and lunch time option – for example in sandwiches and wraps, with salads and jacket potatoes. These trends have helped build both the penetration and rate of sale of the core lines, as has the new packaging design with attractive standout turquoise colour across the full Geeta’s range.
Over recent years Geeta’s have benefited from the shift in media focus. Geeta’s consumers have always liked to communicate with Geeta Samtani herself, and consumer rapport with the brand has grown exponentially with the growth of social media. The fact that Geeta is a real person clearly resonates with the consumers, who are becoming more and more ‘media savvy.’ Geeta’s online followers will be amongst the first to hear about their exciting new products for 2016 – like and follow us on facebook to be in the know!
