- Aldi has launched a search for three budding wine enthusiasts to be part of the selection process for its new wine range
- Wannabe wine connoisseurs should apply for the opportunity and receive a free case of ‘never been sipped’ wines
- Shoppers have until the 10th of March to apply for the role
Aldi, the best supermarket wine retailer of 2021[i], has announced its nationwide search for three budding wine enthusiasts to trial and test wines alongside its buying team – for free!
For the first time, lucky vino-loving shoppers will be invited to Aldi HQ’s taste kitchens to taste test ‘never been sipped’ wines. With coaching from ‘Mistress of Wine’, Sam Caporn MW, they’ll join Aldi’s expert Buyers in deciding which wines will feature in its upcoming range launching in September.
The opportunity comes as Aldi sees more shoppers eager to try new and innovative wines. Over the past year, the Aldi wine range has encompassed more unexpected premium wines than ever before, from countries as far reaching as China to Canada. Now Aldi is putting it to shoppers to help decide what wonderful creations should take pride of place on shelves in the lead up to Christmas.
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said:
“What shoppers want and need are our top priority. We’ve always been keen to hear feedback from our wine-loving customers about what they want to see our on shelves. It helps the wine buying team shape the wine ranges into what they are: high quality, not to mention delicious wines that shoppers want to drink – all at unbelievable prices.
“Our Aldi Wine Club, where we get shoppers to provide honest reviews, has run for a number of years – and this year we wanted to build on it and take consumer involvement a step further through our tasting sessions. It’s a very exciting proposition for us and an amazing opportunity for an Aldi wine-lover to see their favourite wine stocked on our shelves this year!”
As if the exclusive tasting day isn’t incentive enough, Aldi will send the testers a selection of the final wines for free before they launch on Aldi’s shelves.
Aldi’s wine buying team are the remarkable brains and tastebuds behind some of the most praised wines in the UK over the last few years, which has led them to be named Wine Supermarket of the Year 2021 by not one, but three different prestigious awarding bodies.[ii] All whilst keeping prices at amazing value.
For those looking to brush up on their wine tasting skills and to help shoppers with their application, Sam Caporn MW offers some useful advice and top tips on how to taste wine:
1) “Keep the wine you plan to taste somewhere that has a fairly constant, cool temperature (big temperature fluctuations are bad for wine so above the oven for example is a big no-no)
2) “It may seem pretentious to smell wine, but it’s a really important step of the tasting process. Smelling wine releases the aromas and helps you to identify different flavours that your tongue might not pick up. Gently swirl the glass just before to make it easier to pick up on your favourite wine flavours.
3) “Don’t serve your whites or pinks too cold as that makes them harder to smell. As the wine warms up in the glass you will find the wine changes slightly and the aromas become more distinct.”
To apply for the Aldi wine tasting opportunity, shoppers simply need to send an email to wineclub@aldi.co.uk with the below details:
- Full name
- Proof of age
- The name of your social media handles and the number of followers for each account
- 150 words explaining why you think you should be selected as Aldi’s official wine taster for the upcoming Autumn range
- What your favourite wine is and why
Please note, entrants must be available on Thursday 7th April to take part in the tasting process at Aldi HQ.
