GroceryAid’s Coast to Coast cycle challenge will take place for the second year in Wales this July when a team of 70 riders take on the gruelling 358km route to raise funds for the charity.  Not satisfied with the distance alone, the group also faces 5,500m of punishing climbs, a combined figure which is higher than Everest Base Camp and aim to break through the £100k fundraising barrier. This year’s event is sponsored by Coca-Cola European Partners and is led by a committee consisting of Gary Black, Sales Director at Coca-Cola European Partners GB, Dawood Pervez, Managing Director at Bestway and Andrew Thompson, Commercial Director at Booker.

The event starts in Caernarfon and ends in Swansea taking the cyclists through the stunning scenery of Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons.  Last year the 37 participating riders, which included strong representation from the wholesale and convenience sector, raised just over £50,000, which was already a significant increase on the previous totals.  This year the group has not only doubled in size but also aims to double the fundraiser efforts.

Gary Black commented, “GroceryAid is a cause close to my heart as it supports thousands of people in need across our industry. One hundred thousand pounds would provide 135 financial grants for working colleagues who find themselves in a crisis situation or over 400 series of counselling sessions for those who need support with emotional difficulties”.

Steve Barnes, Chief Executive of GroceryAid added, “Applications for crisis grants have increased significantly so if the riders achieve their target it will make a massive difference to the support we can provide to those in our industry who need it the most”.

Gary Black continued, “Thanks to all the riders who have signed up for this years cycle and for those wishing to pledge their support please use this link https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/groceryaidcoasttocoastwales2019.”
