Whitworths announces today its newly appointed Commercial Director, Phil Gowland. Phil joined the company in 2014 to resurrect a tired and declining Whitworths brand in a Marketing Director role. During this time, Whitworths has repositioned the brand away from its traditional baking heritage and introduced a strong pipeline of innovation. Now, with almost two million additional shoppers and 75% growth since 2016 with the brand reaching a value of £50m in 2018, Phil has been challenged with some key focuses for 2020/2021.

Mark Fairweather, Whitworth’s CEO comments: “Like many businesses, we are operating in a challenging trading environment, and we have been impressed with Phil’s approach to building a consumer and category insight-led culture, as well as innovation pipeline and project management processes, driving the business forward. We continue to challenge ourselves, to create products consumers want and need, and we’re looking forward to sharing some exciting NPD with our customers in the near future.”

Prior to Whitworths, Phil Gowland has a wide range of consumer brand experience, latterly in strategic brand and innovation roles at Molson Coors and Britvic Soft Drinks.

Phil comments, ‘I am looking forward to leading the commercial end of a fantastic business with a long list of brand and business advantages. Ultimately my focus will be about putting insight at the forefront of growing our brand, our customers brands and our category.’
