Union Industries, the UK’s leading manufacturer of high-speed industrial doors, has completed the supply and installation of six of its rapid-roller doors at Premier Foods’ Carlton bakery in Barnsley.

This is the second time that Leeds-based Union Industries has supplied doors to the site in South Yorkshire, having previously installed one of its Bulldoors back in 2005.

Headquartered in St Albans, Hertfordshire, Premier Foods plc is one of Britain’s largest foods manufacturers. Employing more than 4,000 staff at 14 locations across the country, some of the company’s much-loved brands include Ambrosia, Bisto, Batchelors, Lloyd Grossman, Oxo, Sharwood’s, Cadbury Cakes and Mr Kipling.

The food manufacturer had a requirement for replacement internal and external doors and opted to have two types of rapid-roller doors from Union Industries’ market-leading range installed – the Bulldoor and Matadoor.

The Bulldoor is the most versatile and popular door in the range, for internal or external, heavy traffic doorways. Known as the ‘reliable workhorse’ of rapid-roll doors, many of Union Industries’ existing customers place repeat orders for new Bulldoors due to the robustness and reliability of this extremely successful door.

The Matadoor is for internal openings and is ideally suited for high-volume traffic, whether Forklift trucks or personnel. This door is manufactured from heavy duty materials and components, hence why it is generally used for high-use internal doorways by all types of traffic, and where extreme reliability is required.

Both the Bulldoor and Matadoor feature a ‘Crash-Out and Auto-Reset’ system as standard, to reduce bottom beam damage and keep downtime to a minimum.

William Littlewood, Project Engineer at Premier Foods, said: “We were really impressed with the quality of components used in the Bulldoor that we had installed back in 2005.”

William added: “The fact it’s the only remaining original high-speed door on site is testament to the robustness and reliability of these doors.”

Union was up against tough competition for this project of replacement doors with their purchase prices coming in at double that of alternatives also quoted.

Premier Foods carried out its due diligence, taking time to investigate build quality, spares availability, after-sales service support and the potential on-going costs that are associated with industrial fast roller doors on the market. Its results were conclusive, so, despite the seemingly high purchase price compared to alternative door suppliers, the order went to Union Industries.

Rob Howe, Technical Sales Engineer for Union Industries, said: “It’s an honour to once again partner with Premier Foods to supply and install rapid-roller doors at its facility in Barnsley.

“Our range of high-speed roller doors are engineered and created to be resilient, long lasting and to undergo high intensity operations, while being tailored to meet our clients’ individual requirements.”
