Lincoln and York and Edwards 1902 English Potato Vodka develop new Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur that picks up double gold medal at renowned San Fran World Spirits Competition

Lincoln and York, one of the UK’s largest wholesale coffee roasters whose clients include many of the high street’s most familiar brands, has unveiled its move into the liqueur industry via its partnership with the multiple award-winning Edwards 1902 English Potato Vodka.

The rich and creamy coffee liqueur, that was only last month awarded the prestigious Double Gold Best in Class Medal at the 2021 San Fran World Spirits Competition, has launched across the UK as consumer demand for premium coffee liqueur has risen throughout lockdown.

Located just a short walk from the roastery, Elsham Wold Distillery – the producers of Edwards 1902 approached Lincoln & York to partner their entry into the coffee liqueur market. Working alongside the coffee manufacturer’s innovation team since July 2020, the final product is a combination of Guatemala coffee from Antigua paired with a single origin English potato vodka.

Having tried various roast colours: dark, medium and light, it was found that the dark option was the best, with a less fruity, but rich and heavy finished product. It was important for both businesses that any ingredients used were simple, powerful, and allowed to speak for themselves.

The move came after the distillers of Edwards 1902 spent eight years researching the best processes and equipment to turn their high-quality King Edward potatoes into a great-tasting, perfectly smooth sipping vodka, before establishing the Elsham Wold Distillery just south of the Humber.

Kieran Power, Coffee Innovator at Lincoln and York said: “We’re really excited to be collaborating with Edwards on developing and manufacturing this product. Having the chance to work with a local, independent British business just down the road from us has also really boosted the collaborative approach and ultimately, resulted in a better tasting product.

“It was important for us to ensure quality was at the heart of the product and of course we’re delighted with the outcome. Once again, working with partners, not clients, has enabled the innovation team to create something truly special. The double gold award is a massive achievement and we’re incredibly grateful to have played a leading part in this story. We offer a complimentary consultancy service to businesses like Edwards, in order to help develop something new and exciting and would call on other businesses considering such a move, to reach out.”

Co-Founder of Edwards 1902, Ben Mordue, says: “We’re over the moon to receive such prestigious recognition for both our Edwards 1902 English Potato Vodka and Cold-Brew Coffee Liqueur. Knowing that both premium spirits have passed meticulous tests of quality and taste – and outscored more established brands in the process – is something we are very proud of. The Best in Class Double Gold Medal for the Cold-Brew Coffee Liqueur is a true testament to the overall quality of our spirits as we combine our potato vodka with a balanced blend of single-origin, cold brewed Guatemalan coffee supplied by our neighbours, Lincoln & York.”
