Arbroath based smoked fish specialist RR Spink is celebrating the securing of two major contracts which will between them be worth £4.5m. in year one – an increase in turnover of fifty per cent for the company, which will shortly be celebrating its centenary.
Two freshly developed products for a UK retailer dominate the new business and are expected to deliver sales worth £3.5m. to Spinks.
One is a chilled, added value hot smoked salmon product comprising four slices which utilises the vacuum skin packing system originally pioneered by the company.
The second – flaked salmon – is presented chilled in a top seal pack.
An additional £1m. of turnover will come from the sale of three chilled trout products – a ready to eat pate; butterfly fillets with lemon, parsley and black pepper; and portions of trout with prawns, chilli and coriander.
To manufacture the products Spinks has spent £200,000 on new processing equipment, including an additional vacuum skin packing machine from equipment supplier VC999. The machine enhances both preservation and presentation.
A further £100,000 has been spent on improving production lines to handle the new trout products.
Spinks, part of the Dawnfresh Seafoods group of companies received financial support from Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Executive to enable the company to drive forward the developments and in doing so create more jobs.
“This raft of new ideas – and there are many more in the pipeline – demonstrates that Spinks is a leading innovator in the smoked seafood sector,” said Spinks director Gary Greenwood.
The new business has led to the creation of thirty new full time jobs in the factory.
