sig-filling-machine-and-cartonSIG Combibloc, one of the world’s leading system suppliers of carton packaging and filling machines for beverage and food, has reinforced its commitment to the environment, with a clear five year plan to achieve its ongoing environmental business objectives.

By 2015 SIG Combibloc aims to increase the proportion of FSC-labelled carton packs on sale to 40 per cent – ensuring 100 per cent FSC-certified fibres in the long term. In addition the company aims to have reduced specific usages in its production plants, e.g. energy by 35%, waste by 25% and CO? emissions by 40%.

Commitment to the responsible sourcing of raw materials is the first step to this success, and the company has already made significant progress. The company recently became the first company in the beverage carton industry to achieve continuous Chain of Custody (CoC) certification at all its production sites world-wide, in accordance with the standards established by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Achieving this milestone allows SIG Combibloc to globally offer carton packs that are permitted to bear the FSC label. The FSC label is the visual assurance that the wood pulp fibres used to manufacture the carton are continuously traceable to responsibly managed or controlled sources.

In October 2009 SIG Combibloc joined the Global Forest and Trade Network (GFTN) operated by the Worldwide Fund for Nature, in order to actively promote forest management that encompasses social, economic and environmental aspects in equal measure.

Cindy Haast, Marketing Manager for Europe North commented: “We are continually striving to improve both our carton packs and production processes, to ensure our packaging remains one of the most environmentally friendly available.

“It has been confirmed by a series of independent life-cycle assessments, conducted by noted institutes, that carton packaging exhibits exceptional properties in all the key environmental categories, and has a comparatively small CO2 footprint. Carton packs generate a significantly lower environmental loading with harmful emissions than, for instance, disposable PET bottles manufactured using fossil raw materials. In the category ‘Fossil Fuels Consumption’, the environmental benefit of carton packaging is even more evident.”

As a founding member of ACE-UK (the UK Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment), the company is committed to ensuring all its carton packs can be recycled. Cindy commented: “SIG Combibloc carton packs can be recycled at 85% of UK local authorities through a bring bank scheme. In addition to this, kerbside collection coverage with UK local authorities is rapidly approaching 30% and we will continue to work with local authorities to ensure this figure continues to increase.”

Gerber Juice Company has already started to use SIG Combibloc FSC-labelled carton packs in Ocean Spray Cranberry and Blueberry products. Jonathan Duffin, Business Development Director UK for Ocean Spray commented: “For us, the origin and processing of our products is of paramount importance. This applies not just to the fruits we use but also in the carton packs we package our juices in. The FSC logo guarantees that only wood from FSC-certified forests managed to the highest standards, and other controlled sources, was used to manufacture the carton packs. This means that, together with consumers, we are contributing to responsible forestry”.
