Colleagues at Sainsbury’s supermarket in Winchester have been celebrating an impressive milestone this month – the centenary of Sainsbury’s arrival in the Hampshire city.  For 100 years the retailer has now been helping and serving Sainsbury’s customers in Winchester, all the while upholding the same commitment to offer delicious, great quality food at competitive prices. Regular customer Delia Room-Saunders joined colleagues to mark the occasion.

The original Winchester store opened in February 1922 in the historic building on the corner of Middle Brook Street and Hight St, which still stands today. In 1964 Sainsbury’s relocated to new premises next door as the retailer expanded its customer offer from a traditional high street store to a supermarket. The same supermarket has served residents and visitors to Winchester city centre ever since, continuing to build  on Sainsbury’s strong brand heritage and history in the community.

Today the store has a number of features that would have been unimaginable when Sainsbury’s first set up shop. For example, customers now have the option to checkout using Mobile Pay or SmartShop, allowing them to pay for products using their smartphones. Sainsbury’s Winchester is also helping customers tackle plastic waste with water filter and flexible plastics recycling facilities in store.

In September 2021 the supermarket underwent a range of upgrades to its look and feel which saw improved signage and displays installed, as well as a new format market-style produce section.

The Winchester team will join thousands of Sainsbury’s colleagues to take part in Comic Relief once again next month, helping to raise funds towards Red Nose Day 2022. Over the past 23 years Sainsbury’s contributions to the charity have totalled over £145 million, donations that have been used to help more than 1.5 million people in the UK and 12.3 million people around the world.

Leigh Phillis, Sainsbury’s Winchester Store Manager, said: “This is a really proud moment for us and I’d like to thank all the brilliant Sainsbury’s colleagues, past and present, who have worked to help and serve our customers in Winchester for so many years.

“It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come as a business whilst staying true to our original values as well as our passion for high quality, great value food. Here’s to another 100 years of Sainsbury’s in Winchester.”
