chestnutstuffedturkeybreasStuffed turkey roulade, crisp turkey and root vegetable bakes, and sweet chilli flavour turkey sausages are among the new products shortlisted for a win in the British Turkey Awards 2010.

The independent panel of judges will taste their way through eleven whole roast turkeys before choosing three finalists for the Best Christmas Traditional trophy. They will also scrutinise another 18 shortlisted turkey products before choosing the winners of categories including Best Meal Solution and Best Innovation, judging on taste as well as appearance, packaging, value for money, and suitability for target market.

Joining the three judges from the media is a consumer who secured a place on the panel after winning a competition on the British Turkey website. Mother-of-three and grandmother Pauline Gibson, 55, of Welling, Kent, said: “As an occupational health manager, I know all the virtues of turkey, how it’s lean, easy to digest, and versatile. My family enjoy eating it all year round, and, although we buy turkey regularly, it will be really interesting to try all the different products available.”

Matthew Pullen, Chairman of the British Turkey Federation’s marketing committee, said: “The vast range and continual innovation of British turkey products is truly highlighted in the awards shortlist. It shows how the producers and retailers are now really putting turkey forward as a mainstream meat, which can be found on fixtures all year round, as well as during the key Christmas season. This is the first year we have seen turkey bacon, smoked sliced turkey and a roulade in the running for an award. We think the judges are going to have a real challenge deciding the winners this year.”

Other short listed entries include a sous vide turkey shank, stuffed turkey portions and a boneless ready-to-roast joint aimed at the Catering sector, as well as spinach and ricotta turkey breast olives from Cranberry Foods and ever-popular Golden Norfolk turkey breast joint from Bernard Matthews Farms.
