Popular food-to-go brand Sushi Daily, owned by parent company KellyDeli, has launched its own range of bao buns, the infamous cloud-like Taiwanese steamed buns, for supermarket shoppers.

Sushi Daily is best known for its fresh sushi counters in selected Waitrose and Asda stores across the UK where customers can watch their sushi being handmade by expert artisans.

Available at counters in Asda at the end of March and in Waitrose from 11th April, bao buns are priced at £3.75 each. The new range offers three products including a Panko Chicken Bao laced with fiery Sriracha sauce, a Sweet Soy Chicken Bao topped with crispy onions and a vegetarian Spicy Tofu Bao made with indulgent katsu tofu and Sriracha.

Each product is dressed with spicy mayo, pickled carrot, spring onion and coriander, and encased in pillowy soft, steamed bao bread, adding a touch of sweetness.

Originating from China in around the third century AD, bao buns have now been adopted around Asia, including countries such as Taiwan, where the pork belly-stuffed gua bao is a popular street food snack. Bao buns have also taken the UK by storm in the last few years.

Traditionally a street food, they can now be found taking on a modern twist on the menus of some of the most sophisticated Asian restaurants in the country.

KellyDeli Managing Director, Ian Roberts, said: “This is a totally new type of offering for us and something that is very different to our usual sushi selection.

“Providing customers with choice and trending products is something that is extremely important to us. We always move with the trends at Sushi Daily and we’re delighted to introduce these vibrant and moreish bao buns which will be a great accompaniment to any sushi spread.”The launch comes shortly after Sushi Daily opened its 100th counter with Waitrose in Chester.
