The Grocery Trader – What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

Ottilie-2Travel to beautiful remote tea regions and the characters you meet there.

GT – Who’s inspired you most in your career?

I’ve been mentored by lots of great people – from my headmistress at school to friends of my parents.

GT – If you were an item in a supermarket, what would you be?

The security camera – I’m annoyingly observant!

GT – If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different?

Very little. I’ve been incredibly lucky.

GT – What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you at work?

Hmmm… some I daren’t share! Spitting tea onto a senior buyer instead of into the spittoon when I was a trainee at Twinings wasn’t my finest moment.

GT – Who or what makes you laugh?

My friends.

GT – Do you have any hidden talents?

I’ve been wracking my brains on this one, so I guess they must be well hidden!

GT – Who would be your favourite party guest?

Any of my closest friends for the reason above and the fact I don’t see them often enough.

GT – What is the greatest luxury in your life?

Having a garden in London – I’m a country bumpkin and need the green space.

GT – What is your favourite guilty pleasure?

Red wine, especially when shared with my amusing friends.

GT – Do you have any secret ambitions?

That would be telling!

GT – What’s your dream holiday destination?

I’m very spoiled as I travel to lots of far-flung places for work so prefer somewhere closer to home when I go on holiday. Italy has everything: food and wine; beautiful architecture and landscapes; great weather for beaches in summer and skiing in winter.

GT – What are your three favourite movies of all time?

Bond, Bond and, er, Bond!

GT – What is your favourite book of all time?

Any one of Louis de Bernières’ Latin American trilogy.

GT – What’s your favourite pastime?

Anything that involves being out in the fresh air or cooking for friends.

GT – If you won the Lottery, what would you do?

The usual: a lovely house with a stable for a horse; frequent holidays; an Aston Martin… I certainly wouldn’t sit idle though, so would spend my time fundraising for charities.

GT – What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into this industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?

Enjoy every minute.
