The leading global snack manufacturer is introducing new paper-based, recyclable packaging for its popular Jacob’s Mini Cheddars, Jacob’s Cheeselets, Jacob’s Cracker Crisps and Jacob’s Twiglets caddies, as it continues to target ambitious sustainable packaging goals.

pladis, the global snacking company behind some of the UK’s most loved and iconic brands, has introduced a greener packaging format for its much-loved Jacob’s Mini Cheddars and Jacob’s Cheeselets 200g snacking caddies, with Jacob’s Cracker Crisps and Jacob’s Twiglets caddies set to follow suit later this year.

The move signifies the next step in the company’s mission towards substantially reducing its environmental impact by making all its packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025, and will save up to 600 tonnes of packaging from landfill every year.

The new, fully-recyclable caddies utilise Sonoco’s EnviroCanTM with paperboard end solution, which is made from recycled paper fibre. Shoppers will now be able to dispose of all empty Jacob’s caddies via UK-wide kerb-side recycling collections.

“The development of sustainable packaging solutions across our bestselling lines remains a huge business priority, and we’re thrilled to have gained further ground in reducing our environmental impact,” says Scott Snell, Vice President of Customer at pladis UK&I.

“As one of the UK’s largest snacking manufacturers, we know that any positive changes we make to the sustainable credentials of our packaging have the potential to make a real impact.

“Our Jacob’s caddies are some of the most popular sharing snacking products in the market and the new, fully-recyclable paperboard containers will help us make a difference, giving shoppers peace of mind when disposing of the packaging in their household recycling bins.”

This is the second sustainability upgrade for the Jacob’s Mini Cheddars brand. Last year, new outer packaging with reduced height and board grade allowed pladis to remove trucks from the road and reduce CO2 emissions by 127 tonnes per year.

Earlier this year, pladis also announced a wave of new measures forming part of a long-term business objective to enhance the recyclability of packaging across the pladis portfolio. As part of this, last month, all pladis-produced problematic-to-recycle black plastic and PVDC film was removed from the UK market, saving 80 million plastic trays from landfill every year.

The new, recyclable Jacob’s Mini Cheddars and Jacob’s Cheeselets summer caddies are available now across major retailers, as well as in the wholesale and convenience channels. The full range of festive caddies – including Jacob’s Mini Cheddars, Jacob’s Treeselets, Jacob’s Twiglets and Jacob’s Cracker Crisps – will be available from September. All packaging will be suitable for household recycling, subject to the discretion of local councils.
