robsons-range-final.jpgPierhead Purchasing, ‘The Imported Beer People,’ are once again adding to their impressive portfolio of distinctive imported beers with an eclectic range of fruit beers and ales from South Africa’s most innovative brewery, the Shongweni microbrewery. Nestled in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, in KwaZulu-Natal, the Shongweni brewery was started by husband and wife team Stuart and Sherene Robson in July of last year. The Brewery has already seen great success, becoming the first microbrewery in South Africa to gain national distribution, with their capacity exploding from zero to 150,000 litres in just over a year.

The craft brewery produces a fantastic range of beers including three tropical fruit beers, a Durban Pale Ale, an East Coast Ale and a wheat beer. The Robson’s range blends traditional European brewing methods with more unusual ingredients native to the region. This means their fruit beers are made with local mangoes, pineapples and strawberries, abundant in the region and they use only whole fruit, no concentrate or syrups. Their wheat beer is based on a centuries old recipe, and their Durban Pale Ale is a South African take on the classic Indian Pale Ale. The brewery’s flagship beer, the East Coast Ale, is an earnest attempt to bottle the spirit of the region.

Stuart Robson, a Brit, combines his love and natural flair for brewing with high and exacting standards to produce his idiosyncratic brews, which have seen the brewery receive international recognition for the quality of their beers.

Michael Cook, Pierhead’s Director of Imported Beers, comments: “The Shongweni brewery is a real diamond in the South African brewing industry and we expect huge interest for the Robson’s range of ales in the UK market.”
