Clamshell packaging has long been established in a variety of markets including electrical goods and fresh product, where its advantages include a positive visual appearance and a deterrent to pilferage. However the format has faced critics who say end-users find it difficult to get into the packaging.
Now Precision has developed a no-knife opening solution using printed tapes from Payne. This solution incorporates an additional perforated lip which can be pulled open, enabling the clamshell closure to be released. As printing on clamshells is limited, Payne’s tapes are applied to the package between the thermoform and the cutting station and are used to indicate where the perforations are.
The tape is from Payne’s Elements range and provides the ideal carrier for additional promotional opportunities.
Precision is now gaining growth in the lettuce and bakery markets in both the US and Canada, where it has been found that clamshells offer a longer shelf life than a traditional bag.
