The latest development in Atlas Packaging’s programme of environmentally positive investment has been completed with the installation of nearly 350m2 of photovoltaic roof panels generating more than 50 KW of energy at its Barnstaple headquarters.

Atlas Packaging specialises in the design and manufacture of corrugated packaging, and has already been awarded a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody Certificate, one of the packaging industry’s most significant environmental accreditations.

Last year the Roundswell Industrial Estate based business installed new energy efficient heating and lighting systems and is now committed to achieving the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System standard by December 2012.

The £150,000 array of PV panels consists of 208, 1.7m x 1m tiles and were supplied by Mole Valley Renewables and installed by Rainbow Renewable Energy Systems.

Atlas managing director Jason Sharman said: “We are very committed to being an environmentally positive business including becoming energy self sufficient.

“The way manufacturing thinks about the environment has changed fundamentally and the momentum to become progressively environmentally positive is not going to slow down or change direction and this will impact not just on production, transport and distribution but on supply chains and customer relations.

“We have used local businesses business based in Soult Molton and Ilfracombe to supply and install our PV panels and M K Gover Electrical Contractors based near Bideford installed our new heating and lighting systems.

“What pleases me most about our environmental achievements is the way all our employees have embraced our commitment to change and have fully supported us at every step on the way. I am certain they will continue to do so as we prepare to qualify for the ISO 14001 standard by the end of the year.”
