In a move designed to further strengthen operating efficiencies and supply chain management whilst increasing conversion capacity by up to 40 per cent, Mercury Packaging – one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of flexible packaging for the mailing, publishing, retail, food, security and fulfilment markets – has completed the relocation of wicketted bag specialist Certiforms to its state-of-the-art facility in Nottinghamshire.

Following its recent acquisition by Mercury, Certiforms’ Macclesfield-based food packaging business has closed, and all work and manufacturing equipment has been transferred to Mercury’s newly expanded 33,000 sq ft production plant with purpose-built conversion hall.

Tony Stanger, Managing Director at Mercury Packaging comments: “The decision to integrate the Certiforms business into the extended Mercury site made commercial sense. Centralising production, sales and administrative functions is set to ensure that all customers benefit from the unrivalled levels of service and quality that have become synonymous with the Mercury brand.”

Amongst the relocated Certiforms systems is a high speed, low maintenance Hudson Sharp 5750 converting machine specially designed for the manufacture of high quality wicketted bags for the food industry.

The advanced system is capable of producing up to 450 packs per minute in a variety of sizes, gauges and substrates including low and high density polyethylene (LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE), polypropylene (PP), and co-extruded films and blends. It can also run micro-perforated biaxially orientated polypropylene (BOPP).

In addition, a range of styles and options are available: with or without gusset; tear-off perforations; punched handles; ventilation perforations; re-sealable tapes; captive flap and blockheaded.

Mercury specialises in the supply of high clarity PP films for display purposes as well as a variety of PE film specially designed to provide the strength and impact qualities required for protection. It has recently added a range of laminates to supplement its single ply films for the food sector.
As well as a dedicated print room housing its recently installed £1.3 million eight-colour gearless print press, and extensive warehousing facilities, Mercury’s conversion hall operates a wide range of advanced converting machines producing simple glue line bags; point of sale, bank note and coin bags; high security bags; and mailing and courier envelopes.

The company is also a market leader in security and track & trace features including sequential numbering, bar coding, and tamper resistant and tamper evident closure systems.
Established in 1999 and currently celebrating its ten-year anniversary, Mercury employs over 50 people at its site in Kirkby-in-Ashfield. With the recent acquisition of Certiforms, it now boasts an annual turnover of approximately £6.2million.
