tabasco-logo.jpgTabasco® brand pepper sauce has achieved the ultimate British seal of approval. In January Her Majesty The Queen awarded a Royal Warrant to its makers, McIlhenny Company. This was a proud moment for the family owned American company, which celebrated its 140th anniversary last year and has been supplying an appreciative UK audience with Tabasco pepper sauce for 120 of those years.

Tabasco sauce was created in 1868 by Edmund McIlhenny on Avery Island, Louisiana from a special variety of pepper plants he had nurtured from a gift of some seeds. Encouraged by local success Edmund decided to market his unique contribution to the world of seasoning and Tabasco sauce as we know it was born.

The business has flourished and remains in the control of the McIlhenny family who oversee every stage of production, from planting, harvesting, crushing, wine-like fermentation and ageing to final blending and bottling. Today, Edmund McIlhenny’s great grandson Paul McIlhenny, CEO and President of McIlhenny Company, maintains the long family tradition. Although production has increased enormously – over 160 countries are now enjoying Tabasco® pepper sauce – the recipe remains the same.

Royal Warrants are a mark of recognition to individuals or companies who have supplied goods or services for at least five years to HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales. A Royal Warrant is highly prized as it is regarded as demonstrating excellence and fine quality.
