hedgehogErnie Hedgehog, lovable icon of cleaning company Spontex, who enjoys cult status in Europe, has crossed the Channel to support the plight of British hedgehogs.

Ernie has teamed up with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society to raise the profile of the charity and make people aware that hedgehog numbers in the UK are seriously dwindling.

MAPA Spontex in France developed Ernie as the logo for their scouring products 11 years ago. As well as appearing on all Spontex scouring products, he has starred in his own TV adverts and there is a huge demand for Ernie merchandise including lovable soft toys.

The UK have now given him his own pages on www.spontex.co.uk as well as twitter www.twitter.com/ ErnieHedgehog and Facebook sites.

The first campaign Ernie will be involved in is Fence For Freedom. Hedgehogs wander up to two miles each night foraging for food. However, over-zealous gardeners often make their gardens too secure leaving nowhere for a hedgehog to squeeze through. Many have starved this way once their food supply has run out.

As well as providing hedgehog-friendly advice on his own Twitter and Facebook sites, Ernie now features in bar-code form on all the Spontex scouring products. Links to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society are being included on the Spontex website – www.spontex.co.uk and future plans include special BHPS products.

Commenting on the move, Spontex marketing manager, Anita Bubb, said: “We try to be as environmentally aware as possible and many Spontex products use natural latex in their composition too.

We’ve introduced a range of wiping products that can be used without additional cleaning fluids, introduced natural products such as bamboo into our glove range as lining whilst our sister company, NUK, is the only baby care manufacturer to have relaunched its entire range free of the chemical BPA”.
