As student Freshers’ Weeks begin across the country, Lidl GB has teamed up with renowned budget chef Miguel Barclay to create seven healthy student suppers for £7. With research showing that perceptions of cost are the biggest barrier to healthy eating, the quick and easy recipes demonstrate that eating well for both health and the planet can fit a student budget.
The new recipes are inspired by the principles of the Planetary Health Diet and the UK’s Eatwell Guide, encouraging students to adopt healthier and more sustainable food habits by making simple swaps such as incorporating a greater variety of plant-based foods and choosing wholegrain options.
For young people, the desire to eat healthily already exists, but the perception that it has to cost more can be prohibitive. In fact, 65% of 18-34 year olds say they actively try to eat healthily every day or most of the time, yet 57% have chosen less healthy options in the past year because they believed that was cheaper, according to research commissioned by Lidl.
To kick-start the new university year, Lidl is giving students the chance to win a “Live Well Golden Ticket” through Lidl Plus, giving them one free Live Well product each week for the rest of the year. Lidl’s Live Well marker helps shoppers identify products that support personal and planetary health.
For a chance to win one of 1,000 exclusive Golden Tickets, students can visit this link before midnight on 2nd October and enter their name, university or college name, email address and mobile number associated with their Lidl Plus account.
Georgina Hall, Director of Corporate Affairs at Lidl GB said: “Starting university or college is often the first time young people are responsible for cooking and shopping for themselves, making affordable, balanced meals that are simple to prepare especially important. We’re proud to be a student favourite for customers seeking quality and value, and we want to support them to make healthier, more sustainable choices throughout the academic year via our Live Well range, market-leading value, and Lidl Plus rewards.”
Miguel Barclay, chef and creator of the One Pound Meals series, said: “Student budgets can be tight, but that shouldn’t restrict access to delicious, healthy meals. I’ve really enjoyed reimagining some classic student staples with an approach that’s nutritious, kind to the planet and affordable. The seven meals for £7 elevate simple ingredients into delicious and filling meals via step-by-step recipes that will be easy to recreate in student halls – helping them to eat well without eating into their budget.”
Inspired by the principles of the Planetary Health Diet and The Eatwell Guide, Lidl GB’s seven affordable and achievable meals give this year’s freshers a practical introduction to healthier eating habits that they can carry with them throughout student life and beyond.
