Just Eat, the UK’s leading food delivery app, has launched a new partnership with Sainsbury’s, marking the platform’s second tie-up with one of the UK’s ‘Big Four’ grocery brands.
The partnership has launched with more than 175 stores in locations including London, Edinburgh and Bristol, with plans to roll out to many more cities across 2023.
Customers across the UK can now purchase items from Sainsbury’s via Just Eat, from fresh milk and vegetables to household essentials. Just Eat will then take care of the delivery, through its growing network of couriers across the UK.
Amy Heather, Director of Strategic Accounts at Just Eat, tells Grocery Trader more.
Tell us about Just Eat’s partnership with Sainsbury’s.
Just Eat’s grocery offering is going from strength to strength, and we’re really excited to be partnering with Sainsbury’s. Since we launched the partnership, customers across the UK will be able to purchase groceries from Sainsbury’s via Just Eat, ordering the food and products they want, when they want.
This partnership will significantly expand the range of grocery products available on Just Eat, with more than 3000 items available for customers to buy on the platform and have delivered in as little as 30 minutes. Our partnership with Sainsbury’s marks a significant step in our ambition to expand our grocery offer across the UK.
How many stores will take part in the partnership and in what locations are those stores?
The partnership will launch with 188 stores by the end of March, covering communities across the length and breadth of the UK. Initially, the service will be available in the cities of London, Aberdeen, Bath, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Leeds, York, Liverpool, Manchester, Newport, Cardiff, Leicester, Oxford, Nottingham, Durham, Glasgow, Newcastle and Sheffield.
What kind of items will consumers be able to purchase via the partnership?
Just Eat customers will have access to a range of groceries and household products, whether that be stocking up on fresh groceries or buying those last minute dinner essentials.
From our experience, the most essential items tend to be the most popular. Last year, through our existing grocery partnerships, we saw eggs, bread and milk take the lead as the most popular items with enough pints of milk sold in the last six months of 2022 to make more than 50 million cups of tea.
How many products are available to consumers?
Just Eat customers will have access to over 3000 products – including Sainsbury’s own branded food and drink.
How quickly will Just Eat be able to deliver the grocery items to consumers once they make their order?
Just Eat customers will be able to access thousands of products for delivery in under 30 minutes.
Is there potential to roll out the partnership across more Sainsbury’s stores in the future?
We are excited to be working with Sainsbury’s and have plans to roll out our partnership to many more cities across the UK throughout 2023.
Sainsbury’s already offers a home delivery service.
What is the advantage to Sainsbury’s of partnering with Just Eat?
We live in an on-demand world and the popularity for on-demand grocery deliveries is on the rise in the UK. As the UK’s largest food delivery platform, investing in grocery delivery means we can help more people access everything from store cupboard essentials to fresh groceries within minutes at the click of a button.
Does Just Eat have partnerships with other grocery multiples as well as Sainsbury’s?
We’re excited to be working with a variety of grocers to bring even more choice and flexibility to our customers. As well as our partnership with Sainsbury’s, Just Eat Takeaway.com supports thousands of grocery and convenience stores on its platforms globally, including partnerships with brands such as Asda, One Stop and Co-op in the UK. In the last year we have expanded to over 2,500 grocery and convenience sites in the UK and households in more than 70% of the UK now have access to thousands of products across a range of grocery stores via Just Eat.
