Iconic SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham is celebrating its official 75th anniversary in September and  British consumers can now commemorate this special occasion with a specially designed collector’s can.  After all no other meat has such a heritage.

It all started when Hormel Foods developed a recipe for a 12 ounce can of spiced ham. Because the new product was quickly copied by competitors, Jay Hormel was determined to find a brand name with a distinct identity to set it apart from competitive products. He launched a series of contests and offered a $100 prize for the best name. Kenneth Daigneau, actor-brother of Hormel Foods Vice President Ralph Daigneau, submitted the name ‘SPAM’ at a New Year’s Eve party to see in the year 1937.

It hasn’t looked back since with sales continuing to grow in the UK.  The special 75th anniversary can will give SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham fans everywhere little bit of SPAM® brand ‘Nosh’talgia which they can keep forever. The commemorative 340g can will be on supermarket shelves from September 2012.

Liz Dee, UK Brand Manager for SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham commented: “SPAM® products have an extremely loyal customer base here in the UK. Research shows that this is continuing to grow with more consumers appreciating not only the unique taste of SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham, but also its versatility.

“We wanted to give something back to fans to celebrate this important anniversary and the collector’s can is something they’ll be able to keep forever as an important piece of brand memorabilia. I’m confident it will also attract new and lapsed users to the brand.”
