starpacks_gold_09Chesapeake was once again recognised as the leading innovator in the carton industry at the Starpack Awards on 30th September 2009. It was the only carton company to secure a Gold award, which was gained in the “Environment – New Developments” category for Green & Black’s Easter Egg packs. The judges announced that there were more entries in this category than any other making the achievement even more notable.

Mark Barthel, Special Advisor WRAP, described the pack as “a lovely piece of structural and graphic packaging… it reduces material by 60% and improves the recyclability of the pack.  All in all an excellent pack.”

Jerry Corcoran (Chesapeake) and Gemma Barton (Green & Black’s) received the award from TV presenter Amy Garcia (left) and WRAP’s Special Advisor, Mark Barthel.

Green & Black’s originally came up with the concept of a ‘bag shaped carton’ – and the Chesapeake Creative team made this a reality, removing, at the same time, the need for plastic fitments to hold each egg in place. These changes to the pack, which is now made entirely from cartonboard, resulted in an annual reduction of more than 70 tonnes of packaging.

The packs are made from FSC certified cartonboard derived from sustainably managed forests. All of Chesapeake’s 28 manufacturing sites are certified to FSC and PEFC Chain of Custody standards – something no other packaging company can match. “We take our environmental responsibility seriously – if you have a pack that could do with a ‘touch of gold’ we look forward to hearing from you,” said Bob Houghton, Corporate Marketing Manager.

Silver… and good to touch!

Chesapeake also won a Silver Starpack Award in the category for Best Luxury Product Design with its Glenfiddich Highland Whisky Cake carton manufactured by Walkers Shortbread. The carton’s appearance is enhanced by a number of striking finishes and print effects to create a highly distinctive and eye catching pack. The judges commented “a beautifully printed carton that gives a real quality feel to a top of the range product.”

Chesapeake range of new techniques is helping brands stand out from the crowd – and can save you money! Subtle reticulation of pearl varnish coatings is now possible, creating a high quality “satin” like metallic finish. This is further accentuated by combination with matt or gloss contrasts. Similarly, in-line reticulations of colour shift coatings create subtle colour changes depending on the viewing angle, coupled with a strong metallic effect. All these finishes, offer the opportunity to differentiate your packaging in the marketplace.
