The compostable Caddybag developed by packaging company Global has delivered a second national award for Oldham Council and The Co-operative. The collaboration won a Green Apple Award in 2010 and in February it won a second award from the Association For Organics Recycling (AFOR).

Currently, councils that operate food waste collection have the option to give away kitchen caddy liners and recover the cost through council tax, or they ask residents to buy their own liners. Global’s Caddybag is a new, competitively priced product that can be used to carry shopping home and then re-used as a liner. Compared to liners sold on a roll, its large capacity enables residents to fill the caddy fully and the handles avoid any spillage. The bag material, developed by Italian bioplastics company Novamont, is also suitable for home composting. As a result, it has become the first compostable product in this field to be accredited by AFOR.

In 2010, Oldham Council asked the Co-operative if they could reliably supply the bag to meet their food-waste collection programme. The Co-operative agreed to sell the bag in all of their Oldham stores and Global provided the essential re-stocking and quality assurances. The decision to adopt the Caddybag instead of issuing free liners has provided significant cost savings for Oldham Council and has helped ensure a high retention rate for their food-waste collection scheme. The alliance has been profitable for The Co-operative too, who are well known as an environmentally conscious retailer. Their stores in the Oldham region have reported an increase in new customers since the bag was introduced and it has become a regular, repeat-purchase item.

Several councils have now adopted the Caddybag in partnership with The Co-operative and Global are keen to introduce it to other local authorities who may be considering the various caddy liner options. They would also like to hear from retailers who may be interested in selling the bags in their stores. More details and samples can be obtained by contacting the company by phone or email.
