Whilst statistics now reveal a shocking 3.8 million people* in the UK have Diabetes and 7 million are at high risk of developing the condition**, Vegesentials is delighted to announce a partnership with Diabetes UK which started on the 28th August 2013. It is hoped that the combined expertise from both organisations will raise awareness of eating well, such as the importance of cutting down on fat, sugar and calories, whilst providing healthier drink solutions for consumers striving to increase their fresh fruit and vegetable intake, whether they have diabetes or are at greater risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
Vegesentials is a naturally nutrient-rich drink. The brand fills a gap in a market where consumers increasingly seek healthier, delicious and convenient options to fit into their fast-paced lifestyles. The drink is 100% pure, raw and fresh and each 250ml bottle contains at least 50% vegetables and at least one portion of the recommended five-a-day intake of fruit and vegetables.
Furthermore, Vegesentials leads the charge as the first fruit and vegetable drink to use non-thermal high-pressure pasteurization (HPP), maximising retention of nutrients such as vitamins. There is no use of pre-packed purees, heat treatment, added sugar, water, extracts, additives, powders or concentrates.
Azmina Govindji, Consultant Nutritionist to Vegesentials says “In the UK, we generally eat too many high calorie foods. This combined with an inactive lifestyle can make you gain weight. Putting on weight, especially around your tummy (called central obesity) is linked to metabolic syndrome, which makes you more at risk of Type 2 diabetes. It is important to eat a healthy balanced diet that is low in salt, fat and sugar and rich in fruit and vegetables. For general health, selecting a drink that is based on vegetables as well as fruit, rather than fruit alone, is likely to help you make lower sugar choices. Portion size is also important. If you’re stuck for what to buy in a supermarket, compare brands and go for the one with the lower sugar and calorie content per portion”.
Paul Amadi, Diabetes UK Director of Fundraising, said: “It’s great that Vegesentials is supporting Diabetes UK through an on pack donation. The money raised will go towards supporting the 3.8 million people with diabetes and will make a real difference by helping to ensure people with the condition and those at high risk of Type 2 diabetes get the support and care they need to have the best possible chance of a long and healthy life.”
Founding Directors of Vegesentials Dr. Andrew Mugadu and Mrs Patience Arinaitwe-Mugadu said of the news: “It makes a lot of sense for us to work with Diabetes UK. They share our values and commitment to promoting the importance of a healthy balanced diet nurturing everyone’s relationship with healthy food in the quest for healthier lifestyles.”
