So we’re proud to present The Grocery Trader’s Review of The Year, with a look back at some of the industry stories from 2009.

As the Review of the Year makes clear, the UK grocery industry continues to have great confidence in its ability to meet consumer needs, come rain orshine.  We have reprinted the full-length articles in this supplement by agreement with the companies and their agencies that kindly supplied them originally. Light hearted or serious, the stories published here represent the wide span of subjects The Grocery Trader covers throughout the year, both in the magazine, in print and digital editions, and on our website, and in turn reflect the many facets of the UK multiple grocery industry.

What will the New Year bring? Are we on the up again now after the recession, or are we on the upwards bit in the middle of a ‘W,’ and will we have to go down again before we go up properly?

What we do know for sure is that the New Year will start with a bump, when the standard rate of VAT returns to 17.5% on 1 January. It was temporarily reduced to 15% last December in the Government’s attempts to bolster the economy.
June is a long way off right now, but it’ll be here soon enough. Officially, the next UK general election will be on or before Thursday 3 June. What will happen to the economy then is anyone’s guess…

For the time being at least Morrisons are happy. As we went to press they had just announced a record weekly average 10.8 million customers through their doors during the 13 weeks to 1 November, up over 1.6 million since they launched their Food Specialist for Everyone strategy two years ago.

As we step into Christmas once again, The Grocery Trader would like to thank our readers in the head offices and branches of the supermarkets, Co-ops, convenience store chains and other grocery traders for your continued interest, and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We’d also like to thank everyone who has supported us this year with press releases and advertising. We wouldn’t have our magazine, digital edition, website and email newsletter for you to read in the first place without you sending us your news – so please keep your stories coming in 2010!
