A range of ethically sourced chocolate bars produced by Derbyshire-based company Organic Seed & Bean needed a packaging supplier who could not only provide a high performance printed film, but one that also matched the ethical values of the brand.

Film packaging specialists National Flexible rose to the challenge by supplying a compostable printed laminate which, as well as being stable enough to achieve over a year’s shelf-life, also addresses the environmental credentials often neglected by packaging.

This has helped Organic Seed & Bean to meet their customers’ needs as well as their own sustainability goals without compromising on shelf life and packaging performance. The packaging has excellent barrier properties and is certified to meet the European EN13432, American ASTM D6400 and Australian AS4736 standards for compostable packaging.

It was an obvious solution for use in this Fair Trade organic application as the film begins life as a natural product – wood, sourced from managed plantations and breaks down at the end of its lifecycle in a home compost bin or industrial compost environment within a matter of weeks. It is also confirmed as suitable for emerging ‘waste to energy’ techniques such as anaerobic digestion.
