BIU Group, previously known as Bag It Up, is one of the UK’s leading textile recycling companies. Since being established 8 years ago, the company has raised over £4.9 million for its charity partners, and has become well-known for its excellent service provided to commercial waste companies, charities, local authorities, supermarkets, convenience stores and other retailers.
Despite the recent rise in popularity of budget retailers and clothes, BIU customers have reported that the quality of stock has remained higher than average, leading to increased yields and a sustainable, measured price increase in the quality of clothes collected.
BIU works with retailers large and small, from the supermarket giants including Tesco, Morrisons, Asda and Waitrose, to convenience stores including Spar and Budgens. Working in partnership, they encourage recycling by installing innovative recycling banks in car parks and roadside locations, where customers can take their unwanted clothing, shoes and household textiles.
BIU’s unique recycling banks feature a chute and an electronic, no-key locking system that makes them extremely secure and near impossible to break into.
Since upgrading 1,100 banks to include the new security system, BIU has seen a 20% increase in yields in areas where banks were previously being targeted for theft. This has meant that the company can guarantee tonnage to customers throughout the year.
BIU’s banks are installed in retail and supermarket car parks across the UK, including Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Asda, Co-op, Tesco, Budgens and Nisa, as well as in retail parks. The company is also working with local authorities to encourage more people to recycle and to stop bogus doorstep operators and kerbside collections.
BIU has also recently been awarded the ISO 14001:2004 and ISO 9001:2008 accreditations for its environmental and quality management systems. This, along with the organisation’s reciprocal agreements with long term and reputable sorting and grading merchants, has meant the level of funds raised for BIU’s partners is being maintained.
BIU’s partner charities include numerous Air Ambulances across the north and south of the UK, as well as Francis House Children’s Hospice in Manchester, and the Wigan Warriors Community Foundation.
