Hundred of meals have been donated to families in Bournemouth in March thanks to customers at Southern Co-op’s convenience stores.

Colleagues at the independent co-operative, which has four stores in Bournemouth, are publicly thanking customers for their donations to Bournemouth Foodbank and Kinson & West Howe Foodbank.

A total of 116.8kg of food was donated in March to Bournemouth Foodbank which is the equivalent of 556 meals.

Marcus Preen?, Southern Co-op’s Area Manager for the region, said: “It’s astonishing to see what an impact our food collection points can have for such a worthwhile cause.

“We were proud to make several one off cash donations to the foodbanks last year so its made me really aware of the high demand for foodbanks in the area – something we all expect it to get worse with the cost of living increases.

“So we wanted to say thank you to all of our customers who have gone that extra mile to support people in need. Your help is invaluable.”

Bournemouth Foodbank says that with the energy price cap rise many families locally will have to find an extra £700 a year just to pay their energy bills.

With stagnant wages, increased prices and inflation, many families are going to be facing crisis.

In the last three months Bournemouth Foodbank has helped over 3,000 people including 850 children.

Susan West, Office Administrator for Bournemouth Foodbank, said: “We are so grateful to your customers for every item of food donated.

“If you support the work of Bournemouth Foodbank please do consider giving us a donation so we can help the most vulnerable people in our community at this time of need.”

Collection points are available at The Co-operative Food stores in Castle Lane, Madeira Road and Belle Vue. Alternatively, there is a collection point for Kinson & West Howe Foodbank – Trussell Trust available in The Co-operative Food in East Howe Lane.

The foodbanks are currently asking for donations of sealed, unopened products with a long shelf life such as UHT milk, fruit juice, rice puddings, tinned meats and toiletries.

Bournemouth Foodbank is run in partnership with local churches, facilitated by Bournemouth Foodbank. To find out more about Bournemouth Foodbank, visit bournemouth.foodbank.org.uk.
