Nominations for Member Nominated Director seats open from today

Co-op is offering members with proven experience at board-level a unique opportunity to stand for election to its Group Board. This year, there are two vacancies for Member Nominated Directors (MND) to join Co-op’s Board and nominations are open from today (Thursday 16 November).

Electing MNDs is one of the many ways Co-op ensures that member-owners are at the heart of their society and the role is an integral part of Co-op’s difference – Co-op is owned by nearly 5 million active member owners, not a small group of shareholders, and exists to create value for them and their communities.  Member Nominated Directors oversee its business interests in food, funeralcare, legal and insurance and are directly elected by Co-op members to make decisions about how their Co-op is run.

2024 will see an exciting time of growth for Co-op, as it continues to increase its active member base. This is an opportunity for Co-op members to join an experienced, high calibre board that is committed to ensuring that one of the world’s largest consumer co-ops continues to deliver on its commitment to its member-owners.

Co-op is looking for members with proven board experience, strong commercial acumen and an appreciation of the strategic challenges that come with a large, complex business of the size and scale of Co-op Group. A commitment to our co-operative values and principles is also essential.

Sam Webster, Vice-President of the Co-op National Members’ Council and chair of the Joint MND Selection and Approvals Committee, said: “Having our members on our Board is part of our Co-op difference – it sets us apart from other investor-owned businesses.

“Our Co-op is committed to ensuring we reflect our membership and the communities we serve and that includes our Board. We encourage applicants from all walks of life and backgrounds who share our values and principles, and our dedication to realising equality and equity. We champion inclusion and we are proud of how diverse our Board is; we look forward to welcoming candidates keen to strive for the highest standards of equality within our Co-op and the wider world. Co-op members will have the final say on who is appointed MND by voting from a shortlist of candidates next year.”

Candidates can find information on how to apply on the Co-op’s website www.co-operative.coop/mndelection and have until Tuesday 19 December 2023 to put themselves forward.

NB: to be considered eligible, candidates need to have earned 1,000 trading points with Co-op in 2023, been a member for three years and have an accomplished track record at board- level. The points and length of membership requirement could be waived in exceptional circumstances.
