The 16th annual British Turkey Awards is now open for entries and retailers are being invited to submit their best turkey products to make this year’s awards the most hotly contested to date.

The prestigious industry awards is made up of 9 categories – many of them retail focussed – and entries are expected to showcase the best in convenience, innovation and range of cuts on offer for Christmas and all year round consumption.

The independent team of judges is made up of three consumers, who won their place on the panel through a competition on the British Turkey website, a catering magazine journalist and an experienced food writer as the chair of judges. Each will pore over and taste products which have been shortlisted for judging using a set of detailed criteria covering appearance, quality, flavour, packaging and POS support.

The awards are a platform which enables retailers and catering suppliers to showcase their very best turkey products and demonstrate how they have evolved in response to changing consumer demands such as healthy options, everyday meal solutions and good value.

Undeniably the most sought-after award is the Retailer of the Year category. Won last year by ASDA, this award allows retailers to show off their entire range of turkey cuts across seasonal entertaining occasions such as barbecue and Easter, as well as weekly primary cuts and new innovative products available in the past year.

In addition to the retail categories, the Student Chef of the Year competition has been rolled out to ten colleges competing nationwide to create the turkey meal which will be served at The Savoy during the awards ceremony on 27th September. And new for 2012 is the Blogger Recipe of the Year Award in collaboration with Peppadew Picante Peppers.

Lorna Cousins, chair of the British Turkey Federation’s Publicity and Marketing committee says, “We hope this year’s awards will be the most exciting yet. There is continual development and innovation on-going within the industry, giving consumers the widest choice possible when it comes to this tasty and versatile meat, so we look forward to seeing a varied range of products being entered. All winners will be eligible to feature a special logo on packs, to help influence consumers purchases, and, with a new award for bloggers, we hope that this wonderful year-round meat reaches out even further to consumers.”
