Retailers and manufacturers are being invited to enter their best British turkey products into the revered British Turkey Awards which is now open for entries.
The annual industry awards is made up 13 categories, including retail and foodservice sectors, and entries are expected to showcase the best in innovation, convenience, taste and appearance. There are four awards dedicated to Christmas turkeys, plus the variety fresh portions available in store for all year round purchase.
An independent panel of judges has been confirmed, including representatives from the Craft Guild of Chefs, The Grocer and Cost Sector Catering trade titles, a food editor from a women’s magazine and a consumer. They will examine the shortlisted products against set criteria such as taste, appearance, quality, packaging and value for money for the target market.
The respected Retailer of the Year category, last year won by Morrisons, gives retailers the opportunity to flaunt their entire range of everyday turkey cuts on sale throughout the year, such as breast fillets, steaks, mince and strips.
The annual Student Chef of the Year competition also forms part of the awards, with young catering students from colleges across the country competing to create the best turkey starter and main course, to be served at The Dorchester, during the ceremony on 24th September.
Catriona Lee, chair of the British Turkey Federation’s Publicity and Marketing committee says, “After 19 years of the British Turkey Awards we still look forward to seeing the new and exciting products that our great industry is producing for the end consumers. The retailers are always really supportive of the Awards and we would expect this year’s entries to reveal consumers have a better choice than ever during their weekly shop. Turkey is a fantastic tasty and healthy meat and we hope that the eventual winners will to encourage more turkey to be eaten throughout the year.”
